Piscina Mirabilis is a remarkable ancient Roman cistern located in Bacoli, near Naples, Italy. The cistern was an integral part of the water supply system for the fleet and played a crucial role in sustaining the maritime activities of the Roman Empire. Constructed with precision and engineering ingenuity, Piscina Mirabilis boasts an immense underground structure. Our proposal begin with a path surrounded by vegetation, it leads directly to a space that belongs to ancient times: the magnificent Piscina Mirabilis. Our project proposal consists in the addition of a new volume that suggests the underground nature of Piscina Mirabilis and uses the morphology of the ground to provide a new entrance in continuity with the cistern’s floor. The exhibition spaces are organized on platforms and walkways placed on different levels to emphasize the perception of the cistern space at different elevations. The presence of the water refers to the ancient function creating a multisensory museum experience.
